District Saves Over $1.3 Million In Costs During Winter Break
With employees at schools and other Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) sites working together and following the District's “Turn It Off” motto, BCPS reduced its electrical consumption during the winter break, by over eight million kilowatt-hours, compared to the same period last year. That reduction resulted in a savings of over $1.1 million. That savings is in addition to an estimated $250,000 to $300,000 saved in refuse costs, by suspending refuse pick-up for the two-week period.
Since the beginning of the District's fiscal year, July 1, 2010, until Friday, January 7th, the District has saved over $4 million in electrical vvvcosts compared to the same period in 2010. BCPS did benefit from a reduced cost of a little more than a penny per kilowatt-hour, but conservation efforts on the part of employees were key to saving taxpayer dollars at a time of budget concerns for the District.
